El 10 de noviembre de 1956, sábado y víspera del día más esperado, Moaña cancela las fiestas patronales (por San Martiño castañas e viño como en la vecina villa de Bueu, también marinera) y desde el mediodía pasa de la música de tres orquestas a los tañidos funerarios, de los fuegos jubilosos al silencio y… las prendas a estrenar se ennegrecen. Cesan asimismo como duelo las faenas pesqueras, porque de 11.106 habs son marineros más de los 2.224 que figuran inscritos y —tras lo ocurrido a 9 millas de casa— guardan luto más de 500 familiares.
